Comic Stars Trading Cards, or Comic Traders, received four
series of printings. The perforated cards feature popular characters from
newspaper comic strips. The cards are approximately 2.25 x 3.5 inches, more
narrow than a standard trading card. The set is unnumbered and the back of each cards is blank.
Some card backs are stamped with various store
advertisements. Cards were originally sold in packs of twelve sealed in cellophane. Each cellophane pack includes a header placard and five duplicates to be
traded. The later printings are packaged inside of die-cut cardboard sleeves.
Superman appears on two different cards in this series and both images were
illustrated by
Wayne Boring. Each card has three variations, or types. The original 1949 issue, or
Type 1, Superman card contains a yellow background with a white border that
is unique to the entire series. The 1949 Type 1 Superman and
Lois Lane card
has a white background.
Type 2 are borderless with yellow backgrounds and a copyright date of 1949.
Type 3 are borderless with yellow backgrounds and a copyright date of 1950.
Superman does not appear in the undated Type 4 series. The Comic Traders sets are not indexed in The American Card Catalog: The Standard Guide on All Collected Cards and
Their Values.
The 1949 Type 1 and Type 2 series each contain 28 cards. The 1950 Type 3
series contains 44 cards.
